GDTs (Gas DischargeTubes) are placed in front of, and in Dimensionunit:(mm)
parallel with, sensitive telecomequipment such as power lines,
communication lines, signal linesand data transmission lines
to help protect them from damagecaused by transient surge
voltages that may result fromlightning strikes and equipment
switching operations.These devicesdo not influence the signal
in normal operation. However, in theevent of an overvoltage
surge, such as a lightning strike,the GDT switches to a low
impedance state and diverts theenergy away from the sensitive
equipment.
